The Testing Method
The ALCAT Test looks at the changes in both the size and the number of leukoscytes after the whole blood has been exposed to the battery of test substances, food additives, coloring, environmental chemicals, and sometimes other individual potential “allergens” according to the patient’s needs. The method of measuring the cells uses an electronic instrument that is capable of discerning these changes with great sensitivity. The method is referred to as the impedance or “Coulter” method. It has been used routinely for many years in hematologic laboratory analysis.
The test mimics, as closely as possible, what actually happens when food products and other foreign substances reach the blood. During the time all the elements that may be involved in an adverse reaction – including all the blood cells,, antibodies, serum proteins, and cytokines (chemical messengers produced at the cellular level.) Allergy testing.
This method is some what analogous to skin testing, where allergen is placed into contact with the histamine containing cells in the skin. However, it is much more sophisticated because the allergen is placed directly into contact with the whole live blood, where it is able to interact with all the immune system cells as well as other factors. Therefore it can show a reaction regardless of what biological pathway causes it. The process is also electronic so it is objective and reproducible. This is why it has such a high level of correlation with clinical symptoms, meaning that it is highly accurate.
The Test Results
Your test will be performed in their FDA inspected lab. The ALCAT Blood Test results are presented to you in an easy to understand, color-coded format (as shown at left). They highlight each patient’s compatible foods, incompatible foods and the level of each reaction (severe, moderate or mild).
The ALCAT Test has been validated by demonstrating a high correlation with double-blind oral challenges with both foods and food additives.
In addition, a controlled study from Baylor Medical College reported 98% success for weight loss and/or improvement in body composition from patients that followed the recommended ALCAT Rotational Diet. Measurement was by underwater displacement technology.
